Is KDP Select Worth It? KDP Select and Kindle+ for Authors (2026)

Is KDP Select worth it? A guide for KDP authors

KDP Select is a free 90-day program that makes your Kindle ebook exclusive to Amazon in exchange for extra ways to earn: your book joins Kindle Unlimited (now Kindle+), where you're paid for every page a subscriber reads, you get promotional tools, and you earn the 70% royalty rate in four extra marketplaces. Whether it's worth it comes down to one trade: exclusivity for page-read royalties. This guide gives you the numbers to decide for your book.

    What is KDP Select?

KDP Select is Amazon's optional program for Kindle ebooks and audiobooks. Enrollment is free, runs in 90-day periods, and when you enroll, your book is automatically included in Kindle+. Your book stays on sale in the Kindle Store as normal, and you keep earning royalties on those sales.

What you agree to in return: during the enrollment period, your Kindle ebook can only be distributed through KDP and public libraries. Not on Apple Books, not on Kobo, not on your own website. Print and other non-digital formats are not affected.

In October 2026, Amazon renamed Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+. The program works the same way for authors: KDP Select is how you enroll, Kindle+ is what readers subscribe to.

What do you get for enrolling?

From Amazon's own KDP Select pages (checked November 2026):

    • Kindle+ inclusion. Your book becomes readable by Kindle+ subscribers in 12 countries: the US, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, India, Japan, and Australia. You're paid for pages read (next section).
    • 70% royalty in four more marketplaces. Sales to customers in Japan, India, Brazil, and Mexico earn the 70% rate, which otherwise pays 35% there.
    • One of two promotional tools per enrollment period. Kindle Countdown Deals (time-limited discounts where you keep earning royalties, available on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk) or a Free Book Promotion (your ebook free worldwide for up to 5 days).
    • Audiobooks now qualify too. Audiobooks with virtual voice enroll automatically when the ebook is enrolled, and ACX audiobooks can be enrolled separately without adding exclusivity requirements. Audiobooks aren't eligible for Countdown Deals or Free Promotions.

One mechanic worth knowing: every Kindle eBook and audiobook enrolled in KDP Select is automatically renewed unless you turn off automatic renewal. To turn it off, click the "..." button next to the book on your KDP Bookshelf, choose "Manage KDP Select", then choose "Turn off automatic renewal". You also have three days from the start of an enrollment period to cancel your enrollment yourself; after that, the 90-day period runs its course.

    How does Kindle+ pay authors?

Each month, Amazon sets aside the KDP Select Global Fund and divides it across all pages read and listened to by subscribers. Amazon reported $69.3 million in total KDP Select author earnings for September 2026. In practice, that works out to a rate per page:

Kindle+ royalties = KENP pages read x that month's rate per page

KENP (Kindle Edition Normalized Pages) is Amazon's standardized page count, so every book is measured the same way. The rules that matter:

    • You're paid the first time a subscriber reads or listens to a page. Re-reads don't pay again.
    • Earnings cap at 3,000 KENP per title per customer.
    • A reader who stops halfway earns you half a book.
    • Each marketplace has its own rate, and Amazon finalizes a month's numbers around the 15th of the following month.

Amazon doesn't publish the rate. Authors work it out from their own reports: a month's Kindle+ royalties divided by its KENP read. Recent author-reported estimates put Amazon.com at about $0.00531 per page, so a full read of a 300-KENP book is worth about $1.59. What does exclusivity actually cost you?

The honest way to weigh KDP Select is to price the thing you give up. While enrolled, you forfeit:

    • Sales on other stores. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play, and Barnes & Noble reach readers Amazon doesn't.
    • Direct sales. You can't sell the ebook from your own website.
    • Pricing freedom off-Amazon. There is no off-Amazon.

If your book already earns meaningful money on those channels, that's the number Kindle+ royalties have to beat. If your wide sales are near zero, exclusivity costs you little, and the decision gets much easier.

Is KDP Select worth it for your book?

There's no single answer, but your own reports can give you one. Work through three questions:

    1. What would a borrow earn you versus a sale? Full-read value is your KENP count times the rate. A 300-KENP book earns about $1.59 per full read at recent US rates, against perhaps $3.45 in royalties on a $4.99 ebook sale. A borrow pays less than a sale, but borrows come from readers who might never have bought, and partial reads still pay per page.

    2. Does your genre live in Kindle+? Subscription readers are heavy in some categories and thin in others. The practical test is your own data: enroll for one 90-day period and compare the Kindle+ royalties column in your Prior Months' Royalties report against what your wide channels earned in a similar period.

    3. Are you earning anything wide today? If yes, Select has a real cost; measure it before you switch. If no, you're trading channels that pay you nothing for a channel that can.

Treat the first 90 days as an experiment with a known end date, and judge it on total royalties per book, not on any one number.

KDP Select and your Amazon Ads

If you run Amazon Ads on an enrolled book, there's a reporting trap worth knowing: page reads are left out of your ad sales and ACOS. Amazon Ads reports them separately as "KENP read" and "Estimated KENP royalties," counted for readers who borrowed within 14 days of clicking your ad.

That means an enrolled book's campaigns look worse in the console than they are. A campaign above your break-even ACOS can still be profitable once page-read royalties are added in. Before pausing a campaign on an enrolled book:

    1. Add the "Estimated KENP royalties" column in the Amazon Ads console.
    2. Add those royalties to your sale royalties, then compare against spend. Our free break-even ACOS calculator does this math for you.

This cuts the other way too: Kindle+ readers browsing the store can borrow instead of buy, so for enrolled books, judge ads by total royalties for the book (TACoS), not by one campaign's ACOS.

If you're managing this across several books, BookBidder brings your KDP royalties, including Kindle+ page reads, in through its KDP Sync extension, so you see profit per book next to your ad spend, and you can set a target ACOS per campaign based on what each book's royalty can carry.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is KDP Select?

KDP Select is Amazon's free, optional 90-day program for Kindle ebooks and audiobooks. Enrolling automatically includes your book in Kindle+ (formerly Kindle Unlimited), where you earn royalties for pages read, and gives you access to Kindle Countdown Deals or Free Book Promotions. In exchange, the digital edition of your book is exclusive to Amazon while enrolled.

    Is KDP Select free?

Yes. Enrollment costs nothing. The cost is exclusivity: while enrolled, your ebook can only be distributed through KDP and public libraries, so not on other stores or your own website. Print and other non-digital formats are not affected.

What is the difference between KDP Select, Kindle Unlimited, and Kindle+?

KDP Select is the author program you enroll in. Kindle+ is the reader subscription, renamed from Kindle Unlimited in October 2026. Enrolling a book in KDP Select automatically includes it in Kindle+. Readers subscribe to Kindle+; authors enroll in KDP Select.

How much does Kindle+ pay per page?

There is no fixed rate. Each month Amazon divides the KDP Select Global Fund across all pages read and listened to; Amazon reported $69.3 million in total KDP Select author earnings for September 2026. Each marketplace gets its own rate. Recent author-reported estimates put Amazon.com at about $0.00531 per page. For your exact rate, divide a month's Kindle+ royalties by its KENP read in your KDP reports.

    Can I leave KDP Select?

You have 3 days from the start of an enrollment period to cancel it yourself; after that, the 90-day period runs its course. Enrollment renews automatically unless you turn off renewal on your KDP Bookshelf, so change that setting before the period ends if you plan to go wide.

Do Amazon Ads count Kindle+ page reads?

Not in ad sales or ACOS. The Amazon Ads console reports them separately as KENP read and estimated KENP royalties, for readers who borrowed within 14 days of clicking your ad. For an enrolled book, add those royalties to your sale royalties before deciding whether a campaign is profitable.
